Shopping Poo

If you are turned off by decent customer service, if rude employees make your day, if you think the customer works for the store, then BJ's Wholesale Club is the place for you.

BJ's is supposed to be a place where you can save money by purchasing items in bulk. You pay an annual fee to gain access to the store and the savings. Competing stores in this market are Costco and Sams Club. These clubs save you money, in part, by lowering overhead, but the BJ's in York takes this all just a bit too far.

Imagine taking your 50 lbs of dog food, your case of fruit, and your ten gallons of spring water up to the cashier and finding that even if you avoid the self-checkout machines and find the rare working cashier, you will still have to haul all of your heavy purchases up onto the conveyor belt. Why? Because BJ's loss prevention is afraid that someone will try and shove a DVD under the bag of dog food. Not only that, but the checker, most of whom are outweighed by the bulk purchase, have to then move your purchases back onto a different cart! All for the purpose of trying to foil the many, many criminals who pay for membership at BJ's. I called BJ's loss prevention and asked them why it was so important to make the customer engage in weight-lifting at the cash register when the employee that checks your purchases on the way out of the store is there specifically to detect theft. They had no answer, nor could they tell me why their competitors do not impose this inconvenience upon customers. I wonder if BJ's upper management has just noticed that customers with large itrems refused to use the self-checkouts because they did not want to have to haul their large items up onto the conveyor belt. Ha! They thwarted that evil customer move!

If you value minor cost savings over your own safety and the safety of BJ's employees, then be sure and buy a membership at the BJ's Gym. I did notice that they are now selling large jars of Whey Protein to help their customers bulk up. Who knows, maybe next month BJ's will require that the customers help stock the shelves.

Finally, the folks at BJ's corporate promised to call me back and explain their horrible customer service policies. I've been waiting 2 weeks and no one has called. Companies like this only understand things that effect their bottom line. One of those things is having a bad reputation on the internet, since people now look to the web for info on companies and products. Most companies absolutely hate to see one tag applied to them and the following is meant to welcome them to the internet's world of bad reviews:

BJ's Wholesale sucks.

BJ's does suck. I receive an invitation for a one day pass for a new store so I go to check it out. I find a couple of items, nothing special. I go to check out and am told that my purchase will be surcharged 5% as a non-member. Well, folks, you are trying to induce me to become a member. It did not matter to me that the total surcharge would be less than $1 - it is the principal. I will stay at Sam's Club and never walk into another BJ's again. You have lose a customer for LIFE
