Online Purchasing Poo

I just shipped some defective DVDs back to an online company and it cost $10.00. Most companies do not pay for the shipping even when their product is bad. This makes me wonder why I even bother to shop online. Essentially, I ended up paying $10.00 for storing their defective merchandise at my house. Had I purchased from a local store, I would have simply taken the product back to the store and saved myself the better part of $10.00.

Would you relate this mailing charge to a store restocking fee?

Not really. A restocking is supposed to discourage people who return products just because they "changed their mind" or just wanted to "try out" the product. However, you are NOT supposed to be charged a restocking fee if the product was defective. Unless you are still dumb enough to shop at Circuit City, you usually won't get charged a restocking fee for returning defective merchandise.

Shipping fees are often charged even when the product is defective. Large companies will often provide an RMA with shipping covered if you ask for it, but small companies just don't want to cover the cost. Unfortunately, it may cost these companies in the long run as customers start comparing their online shopping savings with the cost of returning defective product.
